What Can You Put in a Skip Bin? A Guide to Accepted and Prohibited Waste
Knowing what you can and can't put in a skip bin isn't always straightforward. Different types of waste have different disposal requirements, and some materials need to be handled separately.
As a general rule, a skip bin is a good option when your waste is too large or bulky for your regular council rubbish bin, you have more waste than your household bins can handle, or you're dealing with materials from a renovation, construction, landscaping or clean-up project.
At Blast Bin Hire, we offer a range of skip bins for everything from household clean-ups and garden projects through to renovations, construction sites and larger demolition jobs.

What Can You Put in a Skip Bin?
We accept a wide range of common household, construction, renovation and garden waste. Depending on the type of bin you hire, accepted materials can include:
Construction, Demolition and Renovation Waste
Skip bins are ideal for managing the general waste generated during building and renovation projects.
This can include materials from structural alterations, property renovations, demolition, strip-outs, excavation and general construction work.
Having a skip on-site means you can dispose of suitable waste as your project progresses, helping keep the work area organised.
Bricks, Concrete, Rubble and Roofing Materials
Heavy construction materials can quickly become difficult to manage without the right waste solution.
Depending on the skip you hire, suitable materials can include bricks, concrete, concrete slabs, rubble, rock, stone, roof tiles and other masonry waste.
Because these materials are particularly heavy, it's important to choose a skip that's suitable for the weight of your load. If you're disposing of significant quantities of heavy materials, speak to our team about our options for heavy construction waste, including bins suitable for loads of up to 2 tonnes.
Timber, Metal, Steel and Iron
Renovations, demolitions and construction projects can generate large quantities of timber and metal offcuts.
Suitable waste can include structural timber, scrap wood, pallets, sheet metal, steel, pipes, iron and other general metal waste.
Where possible, break down larger pieces before loading your bin. This helps you make better use of the available space while keeping the load stable.
Plasterboard, Gyprock and General Trade Waste
Trades can generate a wide range of waste throughout a project.
This can include plasterboard, Gyprock, plaster trim, insulation remnants, joinery offcuts and other general trade waste.
If you're unsure whether a particular trade material can go in your skip, it's best to check with our team before loading it.
Cardboard, Paper, Packaging and Plastics
Commercial projects, renovations and moves can generate a surprising amount of packaging waste.
Cardboard boxes, paper, protective packaging, wrapping materials and suitable hard plastics can all take up valuable space in your regular bins.
A skip provides a convenient way to manage larger volumes of this type of general waste during a project or clean-up.
Green Waste, Garden Waste, Dirt and Soil
Planning a garden makeover or landscaping project?
A skip can make it much easier to manage branches, shrubs, garden waste and other suitable organic material generated during a clean-up.
Soil, dirt and clean fill can also be suitable for particular skip options. However, soil and other heavy materials can quickly add significant weight to your load, so make sure you choose a bin that's appropriate for the material you're removing.
Household Rubbish and Furniture
Skip bins aren't just for builders and tradies.
They're also useful for household clean-ups, moving house, garage clear-outs, shed clean-outs and deceased estate clean-ups.
Depending on the bin and waste type, this can include old furniture, carpets, underlay, household appliances, whitegoods and general household rubbish.
If you're clearing out an entire property, a skip can save you from making repeated trips to dispose of bulky household waste.
What Can't Go in a Skip Bin?
While skip bins can handle a wide range of waste, some materials are strictly prohibited.
These items can create serious safety, environmental or disposal risks and must not be placed in your skip.
No Sharps or Needles
Sharps, needles and other medical sharps cannot be placed in a skip bin. They can cause serious injuries to anyone handling, transporting or sorting the waste.
No Hazardous Waste
Hazardous waste requires specialised handling and disposal and cannot be placed in our skip bins.
No Poisons or Toxic Waste
Poisons, toxic substances and other materials that may pose a risk to people or the environment are prohibited.
No Asbestos
Asbestos is strictly prohibited. It requires specialised removal, transport and disposal and must never be placed in a general waste skip bin.
Accepted waste that must not be placed inside the skip
Batteries
Batteries cannot be placed in skip bins due to the safety and fire risks they can present. Batteries are accepted but must not be placed inside the skip.
Gas Cylinders
Gas bottles and cylinders cannot be placed in skip bins, even if they appear to be empty, they are accepted waste and be removed alongside your skip, just let the team know prior to collection.
Aerosols
Aerosol cans and other pressurised containers are prohibited due to the risks associated with their contents and pressure, aerosols are an accepted item, but must not be placed inside the skip.
Liquid Paints or Oils
Liquid paints, oils and similar liquids cannot be placed in the skip.
If you're unsure whether a particular item can go in your skip, contact the Blast Bin Hire team before putting it in the bin. It's always better to check first than risk additional disposal charges or delays to your collection.
What About Tyres and Mattresses?
Some items that aren't suitable for standard skip disposal can be arranged as additional services.
Tyres and mattresses are available as add-ons when booking, allowing us to know about them before we collect your skip.
If you have bulky, unusual or potentially restricted waste, let us know what you're disposing of before booking and we'll help you work out the appropriate option.
What About Mixed Construction and Demolition Waste?
For many renovation and construction projects, waste isn't limited to one material.
You may have a mixture of timber, bricks, plasterboard, packaging, metal and general construction waste. A suitable mixed-waste skip can provide a practical solution for managing these materials together.
If your project is generating a particularly large or varied waste load, speak to our team before booking. We can help you determine the most suitable bin for the type and volume of waste you're expecting.
Choosing the Right Skip for Your Waste
The best skip for your project depends on more than just the amount of rubbish you have.
Consider:
-
The type of waste you're disposing of.
-
The volume of waste your project is likely to generate.
-
The weight of the materials, particularly if you're disposing of concrete, bricks, soil or rubble.
-
Any prohibited items that may require alternative disposal.
-
How you'll load the bin, particularly if you're dealing with large or heavy materials.
Choosing the right bin from the beginning can help you avoid unnecessary charges and make your clean-up more efficient.
